Vermont State University Community Grieves After Retired Dean's Senseless Killing

The tragic and senseless killing of a beloved retired dean from Vermont State University has left her family and the community in mourning. Police are diligently searching for the unknown assailant responsible for this heinous act.

Dr. Honoree Fleming, aged 77, was fatally shot during a late Thursday afternoon walk on the D&H Rail Trail, approximately a mile away from the Castleton campus. Her husband, Ron Powers, a Pulitzer Prize winner, shared the heart-wrenching news on Facebook, revealing that the perpetrator delivered a fatal gunshot—possibly two—to her head before walking away. Dr. Fleming passed away instantly.

Describing his wife, Powers wrote, 'Those of you who knew her know that she was beautifully named. I have never known a more sterling heart and soul than hers. She has taken far more than half my own heart and soul with her.'

A witness provided a brief description of the suspect as a white male, approximately 5′10″ tall, with dark hair, wearing a dark gray T-shirt and carrying a black backpack, according to Vermont State Police.

As the investigation unfolds, police are exploring all possible angles, including the possibility that the attack was random. K-9 Units are currently assisting in the search, but details remain limited.

Vermont State University released a statement honoring Dr. Fleming, acknowledging her as a beloved dean and professor at Castleton, renowned for her impressive research and numerous published papers. University President Mike Smith expressed condolences, saying, 'This is an unbelievable tragedy for the Castleton campus and for all of Vermont State University. Honoree will be deeply missed.'

State police are urging residents to review any surveillance footage, including doorbell cameras, from October 5, especially during the late afternoon to early evening hours. They are also appealing for tips and information related to the case.

The Vermont State University Castleton Campus Facebook page is filled with heartfelt tributes and memories from students who benefited from Dr. Fleming's teachings and research.

Fleming's death has had a profound impact on the campus community, even before her identity was confirmed as the victim.

One VSU student expressed their concern on Facebook, saying, 'How are we as students supposed to feel safe? This is absolutely heartbreaking.' Another local resident shared their unease, stating, 'Definitely feeling a little uneasy tonight considering the rail trail is right out behind our house.'

As of Saturday morning, there have been no updates on the case, and law enforcement agencies continue to search for the unidentified gunman. The investigation involves various units and departments dedicated to resolving this tragic incident."
