In Wisconsin, a man faces charges related to a tragic accident that took the life of a 4-year-old girl, and now, he's accused of stealing a memorial cross from the accident site.
Nathan Heitzmann, 24, has been charged with misdemeanor theft for allegedly taking the memorial cross. He's also facing a felony bail jumping charge, as per court records.
Back in May, Heitzmann was charged with knowingly driving a vehicle while his license was suspended, resulting in the death of Cordelia Kuether, a vehicular homicide case linked to an April incident, according to TMJ4.
He pleaded not guilty to these felony charges in May, as reported by the Sheboygan Press.
A criminal complaint states that on August 17, police started investigating the missing white cross, which Cordelia's family had bought.
During the investigation, an officer talked to a witness who claimed that Heitzmann opened his backpack and showed the witness a white cross, saying he needed it for himself, as cited by FOX6.
When questioned about the cross, Heitzmann allegedly responded, "Are you sure my little brother didn't take the sign, officer? The other day, he told me he was really getting sick of looking at it." He also allegedly asked, "Did it get picked up and grow legs," as per TMJ4, which cited the complaint.
Devon Kuether, Cordelia's father, expressed his grief, saying, "Life is very fragile, and you never know exactly when something as fragile as that can be taken away from us." He wondered, "How could this guy... go and do this?" according to Fox6.
The tragic crash happened on April 12 when a van and a pickup truck, purportedly driven by Heitzmann, collided at an intersection in Sheboygan. The van left the road and struck a group of pedestrians, causing Cordelia's fatal injury.
Three of Cordelia's family members sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals. Cordelia and her younger sister Lily had stopped to pet a dog when the accident occurred, as reported by WISN-TV.
The complaint obtained by Fox6 indicated that Heitzmann admitted fault for the crash and felt guilty for what transpired.
The Department of Motor Vehicles had notified Heitzmann of his suspended license in March, according to the complaint.
A status conference is set for November 22.
