Met Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Gangster Faces Misconduct Hearing

A police officer, referred to as W80, faces a serious hearing after fatally shooting a gang member eight years ago, confirmed by Scotland Yard. Despite being cleared of criminal charges, W80 could lose their job due to alleged gross misconduct related to the incident near Wood Green Crown Court in north London.

Back in December 2015, W80 shot Jermaine Baker during a police operation, an action deemed as 'lawful killing' in a subsequent public inquiry in July 2022. However, the inquiry highlighted several police operation shortcomings.

Following a legal battle, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) succeeded in demanding disciplinary action against W80 from the Met Police. Scotland Yard acknowledged the need for a swift resolution, asserting the independence of the impending misconduct hearing, which will involve a panel member from another force and an independent chair.

Margaret Smith, Baker’s mother, supports the IOPC's call for another force to conduct the hearing, citing concerns about the Met's involvement in legal proceedings that could hinder impartiality. The IOPC emphasizes the necessity of public confidence in the hearing’s independence.
