In a tragic incident that occurred nearly seven years ago, a man named Maurice Green has been sentenced to 24 to 40 years in prison for the third-degree murder of Marie Buck, an 81-year-old store owner in South Philadelphia.
Green's sentence stems from the shooting death of Buck on Christmas Eve 2016, a crime that shocked the community and left Buck's family devastated. Prosecutors presented evidence that Green intended to kill another person he believed was responsible for stealing his $5,500 gold chain.
However, that individual was not present in the store at the time of the shooting.
Green expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to Buck's family in court. He recalled growing up near the store and having fond memories of purchasing sandwiches there. Buck's family members, some visibly moved, were present in the courtroom during the proceedings.
Marie's daughter, Marie, expressed her relief that the case was finally resolved and spoke of the deep void left by her mother's passing. The trial judge, Glenn Bronson, lamented the senselessness of the crime, stating that it was "incomprehensible" to shoot an unarmed, elderly woman over a material possession.**
Prosecutor Joanne Pescatore described the incident as a "sad commentary on drugs in this city" and expressed sympathy for the Buck family.
