Deja Taylor, Mother of a 6-year-old Virginia Boy Who Shot a Teacher, Has Been Sentenced To 21 Months in Prison

The mother of the 6-year-old boy involved in the January shooting of his first-grade teacher in Newport News, Virginia, has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison.

Deja Taylor faced charges related to marijuana use while possessing a firearm and making false statements about drug use during the firearm purchase, both felonies, following the incident at Richneck Elementary School.

Taylor, who pleaded guilty to the charges in June, received a 21-month sentence as requested by federal prosecutors. She could have faced up to 25 years in prison.

The 6-year-old student intentionally shot and injured teacher Abby Zwerner, who testified during the sentencing about the lasting impact of the shooting, revealing physical and psychological scars.

The firearm used in the incident was traced back to Taylor's purchase in July 2022. ATF agents discovered the absence of a lockbox, trigger lock, or key for the gun. Zwerner emphasized the permanent damage and multiple surgeries she endured, expressing that such harm could have been prevented if not for Taylor's actions.

In the weeks before the classroom shooting, Taylor's firearm was also involved in another incident. Prosecutors revealed that Taylor shot at her son's father after seeing his girlfriend, causing property damage to an unreturned U-Haul truck.

Prosecutors highlighted Taylor's chronic marijuana abuse, stating it extends beyond occasional and recreational use, violating federal laws prohibiting marijuana possession while owning a gun.

Taylor's attorney acknowledged her remorse and full responsibility, expressing hope for her rehabilitation during and after serving the sentence.

Taylor faces state charges related to the shooting and previously pleaded guilty to child neglect, awaiting sentencing. Zwerner filed a $40 million lawsuit against the school district, alleging negligence, and a judge recently ruled the lawsuit can proceed.
