Miami Mother's Attempt to Intervene in Son's Street Fight Results in Accidental Injury

A Miami woman was arrested after she accidentally hit her own 12-year-old son with her car in an attempt to stop a street fight he was involved in.

The incident occurred on Monday in the 500 block of Northwest 77th Street near Little Haiti. Police responded to reports of "threats being made with a firearm."

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Quantavia Samuel, 33, and her son arguing outside of a home. Samuel was detained by police.

Samuel's son told officers that he had been attacked earlier by two teens, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old. He said that one of the teens had pulled out a black handgun during the fight.

The boy called his mother for help. In the midst of the fight, the 12-year-old was hit by Samuel's car. She picked him up off the ground and took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The boy is not suffering from serious injuries, police said.

Police also spoke to the two teens who allegedly attacked the 12-year-old. Their story was different from Samuel's son's story.

The 13-year-old said that it was actually Samuel's son who began shouting and cursing at him, threatening to pull out a gun and shoot him. The boy agreed to fight him later and ran back home to get his cousin, who was to act as a referee.

During the scheduled fight, which the 13-year-old says he won, he saw Samuel's SUV barreling toward him and the other boy. The 13-year-old and his cousin were able to get out of the path of the car, but the 12-year-old was hit.

Because there was no evidence to substantiate the claims of one of the teens having a gun, the young boys were not charged. The investigation is still open.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is also investigating the incident.
