Remembering Bradley Haas: Security Guard Remembered for Courage in Hospital Shooting That Claimed His Life
Bradley Haas, a security guard at a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire, who was tragically killed after confronting a shooter, has been hailed as a hero for his lifelong dedication to public service.
Haas, aged 63 and from Franklin, was on duty at the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord when a gunman fatally shot him around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, according to a statement by the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.
He was not just a father but also served as the former chief of police with the Franklin Police Department for almost 30 years, as detailed in the statement. Haas had a prior background as a military police officer in the U.S. Army. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
An autopsy confirmed Haas' cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds, ruling it a homicide, as mentioned by the AG’s office.
New Hampshire Homeland Security and Emergency Management acknowledged Haas' bravery in a statement following his death, commending his courageous act of confronting the shooter and preventing further harm.
Commissioner Robert L. Quinn of the New Hampshire Department of Safety extended condolences, acknowledging Haas as a dedicated member of the safety team who sacrificed his life protecting the patients and staff of New Hampshire Hospital.
Following the shooting of Haas, the suspected shooter, 33-year-old John Madore, was also shot and killed by a New Hampshire State Police trooper assigned to the hospital. The trooper's identity remains undisclosed pending formal interviews, as stated by authorities.
State Police Col. Mark Hall mentioned ongoing investigations into a U-Haul truck left at the scene, containing an AR-15-style weapon, a tactical vest, and ammunition. However, Madore's connection to the truck remains unclear.
The AG’s office urges anyone with information on the case to contact the State Police Major Crime Unit at (603) MCU-TIPS (603-628-8477) or via email at [email protected].
