In 2015, during a reopened investigation into a 1993 cold case involving the shooting death of liquor store owner Steven Weltig in Arnold, Missouri, Loril Harp, a suspect, was caught making self-incriminating comments when detectives momentarily left the room. Detectives Brett Ackermann and Josh Wineinger revisited the case in 2020, reviewing footage from the 2015 interrogation. Harp's behavior, including talking to himself and expressing guilt over the phone, raised suspicions.
Throughout the interrogation, captured in seven videos obtained by Fox News Digital, Harp exhibited nervous tics, verbalized doubts about his innocence, and engaged in erratic behavior. Detectives noted a crucial phone call where Harp implied he would end up in jail, further pointing to his culpability.
In 2020, despite Harp's failing health, detectives brought him in for questioning. During the intense 3½-hour interview, Harp evaded questions, initially denying involvement. However, Ackermann confronted him with evidence of his presence at the crime scene and the sound of a gunshot.
Under pressure, Harp admitted to a physical altercation with Weltig but insisted he didn't shoot him. He claimed self-defense, describing a struggle in which he allegedly disarmed Weltig and fled through the store's side door. Detectives seized on this detail, asking about Harp's actions after the incident. Harp's admission of having blood on him became a pivotal moment, leading to his arrest on September 30, 2020, on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
In the aftermath, during a poignant moment, Detective Wineinger asked Harp if it felt relieving to no longer carry the burden of suspicion after 27 years. Harp passed away a year later at 69, leaving the case closed.
