A Desperate Plan: Husband, Leonard Thuo Mwithiga Allegedly Plots Murder of Estranged Wife

A 52-year-old Kenyan man, Leonard Thuo Mwithiga, is accused of plotting to kill his estranged wife in Connecticut. This disturbing case involves alleged abuse, a daring escape, and a desperate attempt to silence the victim.

The investigation began with an Uber driver, who acted as a confidential informant (CI) for the police. During several rides between September and December 2023, the driver overheard Mwithiga speaking about his desire to harm his wife. These conversations were secretly recorded and provided crucial evidence against the suspect.

Mwithiga allegedly referred to his wife as "evil" and expressed his anger towards her. He ultimately asked the driver to find a hitman, suggesting methods like injecting the victim with something deadly.

The police report reveals a history of abuse and manipulation. In 2021, when the victim attempted to leave Kenya with their children, Mwithiga filed a false police report claiming she was mentally unstable. This resulted in her involuntary confinement in a mental health facility.

Despite the abuse, the victim reconciled with Mwithiga after her release. However, the abuse continued, with Mwithiga physically assaulting both the victim and their son. Fearing for her safety and the safety of her children, the victim fled to Connecticut in September 2022.

In a desperate attempt to regain control, Mwithiga initiated legal proceedings to bring the children back to Kenya. He also hired private investigators to track the victim's son.

The climax of the case came on December 4th, 2023. In a staged meeting, Mwithiga met with an undercover police officer posing as a hitman. He allegedly paid the officer $300, outlining his plan to kill his wife using fentanyl disguised as cocaine.

Mwithiga was arrested shortly after and charged with criminal attempted murder, conspiracy, and witness intimidation. His bond was set at $5 million.

This case highlights the devastating consequences of domestic abuse and the lengths some individuals will go to maintain control. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement and confidential informants in protecting victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.
