In a tragic incident that has shaken the Las Vegas community, a driver accused of killing two Nevada State Police troopers in a hit-and-run crash was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to court documents obtained by 8 News Now.
The driver, 46-year-old Jemarcus Williams, was arrested and charged with two counts of DUI resulting in death, reckless driving resulting in death, and failing to stop at the scene of a crash. Prosecutors have since added three more charges to the case, including speeding and failure to decrease speed for an emergency vehicle.
According to the documents, Williams was at the Palms Casino Resort on the night of the crash, where he ordered a bottle of Hennessy and four vodka drinks with another man. Surveillance footage shows Williams leaving the casino with security officers around 3:15 a.m.
Six minutes later, Williams is alleged to have gotten into the car that was later involved in the hit-and-run crash. The crash occurred around 3:24 a.m., killing Sgt. Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix.
Blood tests conducted on Williams revealed a blood-alcohol level of 0.19, more than double the legal limit in Nevada. Investigators also suspect that Williams was under the influence of marijuana.
Williams is currently being held on $500,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for December 5th.
The Palms Casino Resort has released a statement expressing their deepest sympathies to the families of the two troopers. They are also cooperating fully with the police investigation.
Memorial services for the two troopers will be held at Central Church in Henderson. Felix's service will be held on Friday, December 8th at 10:30 a.m., and Abbate's service will be held on Monday, December 11th at 10:30 a.m. Both services are open to the public and will also be available to live stream on NSP's YouTube channel.
