Florida Grandmother Found Wandering Streets High, Holding Toddler in Cold, Faces Child Neglect Charges

A 47-year-old Florida grandmother, Rebecca Cross, was arrested early Monday morning after she was allegedly found wandering the streets of Pensacola high on narcotics, holding her 3-year-old grandson in cold weather.

Police received a call around 4 AM regarding a woman acting erratic and screaming while holding a child. Upon arrival, officers found the toddler wearing only pajamas despite the 45-degree Fahrenheit temperature and windy conditions. The child was cold to the touch and appeared red and discolored, indicating exposure to the cold for a prolonged period.

Investigators determined that Cross had been solely responsible for the child's care since Friday. During their interaction with Cross, police noted her agitated and confused state, difficulty focusing and remembering information, and dilated pupils. They suspected she was under the influence of an unknown narcotic.

The child was immediately taken to a hospital for evaluation, and Cross was arrested and charged with child neglect. She is currently being held at the Escambia County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has been notified of the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
