Former Federal Correctional Officer Faces Five Years In Prison For Sexually Abusing Inmates

A former federal correctional officer, John Russell Bellhouse, was found guilty of sexual misconduct involving two female inmates at FCI Dublin, a women's prison in California. Bellhouse faces sentencing in August.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Bellhouse developed an inappropriate relationship with one inmate, referring to her as his "girlfriend" and engaging in sexual contact with her twice in the prison's safety office. He also provided her with unauthorized privileges, such as using an office phone and receiving earrings.

Bellhouse's actions are part of a broader pattern of sexual abuse at FCI Dublin. The prison's former warden, Ray Garcia, was convicted of molesting inmates and forcing them to pose naked in their cells.

The Bureau of Prisons has taken steps to address the issue of sexual abuse at its facilities, including implementing new training for prison wardens and creating specialized teams aimed at curtailing sexual abuse.
