A 21-year-old Idaho man, Gabriel G. Routt, faces years behind bars for a series of violent attacks against his pregnant girlfriend. Routt, overcome with sobs in court, pleaded for treatment instead of prison, but Judge Ben Cluff deemed the crimes "horrific" and sentenced him to at least eight years.
Police records reveal Routt terrorized the victim on two occasions, July 1st and September 6th. In the most disturbing incident, he bit her face and leg, kicked her stomach, and threatened to kill their unborn child. The victim was eight weeks pregnant at the time.
Judge Cluff acknowledged Routt's desire for treatment but emphasized that it would occur within prison walls. He convicted Routt of attempted strangulation and kidnapping, among other charges, resulting in the lengthy prison sentence.
The July 1st attack stemmed from a disagreement over leaving the house. Routt choked and dragged her towards their car, leaving visible marks on her neck. Documents reveal a previous choking incident the week before.
The September 6th assault unfolded after Routt discovered messages about the victim's plan to leave him. He pushed, bit, and kicked her, then attempted to strangle her again. The victim fought back and threatened to call the police, prompting Routt to flee. He was later apprehended at his parents' house.
This case highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help for both victims and perpetrators. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, resources and support are available.
