A 31-year-old Ohio man will spend over a decade behind bars for a horrific crime involving kidnapping, assault, and attempted murder.
Dalontay R. Edmond-Geiger pleaded guilty to kidnapping, felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and having weapons while under disability. He received a sentence of 16 to 20 years in prison.
The victim, a 60-year-old woman, was held against her will, severely beaten and stabbed, and then stuffed into a small black plastic storage container. Despite the brutality, she miraculously survived.
Prosecutors described the crime as "cruel, barbaric, and disturbing." They noted that Edmond-Geiger showed no remorse for his actions, even yelling nonchalantly to officers about the victim's location.
The judge overseeing the case echoed these sentiments, stating that she had never seen such a crime in her nearly 20 years on the bench.
The victim, who remains mostly paralyzed from the attack, addressed the court via Zoom. She stated that she is not a victim but a survivor and will continue to live despite the trauma.
The events unfolded in May 2023 when police received a tip about a woman being held hostage in Edmond-Geiger's basement. After initially denying any wrongdoing, Edmond-Geiger eventually confessed to the crime.
Police found the victim hidden in a small storage container beneath the porch. She was unconscious and required medical attention.
Edmond-Geiger is likely to face additional charges as the investigation continues. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of violent crime and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
