Parents Charged After 4-Year-Old Shoots Himself with Unsecured Gun

Tragedy struck a Pennsylvania family when a 4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with an unsecured gun in his home. Now, his parents, Laura Steele and Michael Lynn, face criminal charges for endangering their child's welfare and recklessly endangering another person.

Authorities discovered the handgun involved was kept loaded and accessible on the floor of a bedroom, where it was easily accessible to the young boy.

According to the district attorney's office, both parents were present at home when the shooting occurred and heard the gunshot from the bedroom. They found their son injured with the gun beside him.

The boy, identified as Ronnie Lynn, was airlifted to a children's hospital for emergency surgery. Sadly, he sustained lasting injuries and now requires constant medical care, including physical therapy due to partial paralysis in his arms and legs.

Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli deemed the incident a "tragic and unacceptable shooting" that could have been prevented. She emphasized the importance of responsible gun ownership and urged gun owners to store firearms in a safe and secure location.

"This little boy will likely have to live with this painful reminder for the rest of his life," Ziccarelli added.

The district attorney's office has partnered with the nonprofit Ray of Hope to provide free gun locks to the community. This initiative aims to raise awareness about safe firearm storage and encourage responsible gun ownership to protect children from unsecured firearms.

It remains unclear whether Steele and Lynn have entered a plea or retained legal representation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety and the devastating consequences of unsecured firearms. The tragedy underscores the need for responsible gun ownership and proper storage practices to prevent such accidents from occurring in the future.
