Just before Christmas, a Wisconsin family faces unspeakable sorrow. A suspected drunk driver crashed head-on into their SUV, tragically taking the lives of four siblings.
The victims, identified by the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office, were Daniel Gonzalez (25), Fabian Gonzalez (23), Lilian Gonzalez (14), and Daniela Gonzalez (9). Each had dreams and aspirations.
Lilian, a high school freshman, wanted to be a teacher, while Daniela, a fourth grader, dreamed of cheering on the sidelines. Their brother Daniel and Fabian, both music lovers, shared a job and were inseparable.
Scott Farmer, 47, allegedly caused the crash while driving his pick-up truck the wrong way on Highway 10. Facing four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, Farmer remains in custody. He had four prior DUI convictions and allegedly showed signs of intoxication at the scene, even claiming he hadn't hit anyone.
Adding to the family's anguish, Farmer received a $750,000 bail, deemed insufficient by the victims' loved ones. "Justice doesn't come in such a small price," declared their stepfather, Kurt Schilling.
The community rallies around the grieving family. Multiple GoFundMe pages have raised over $132,000 to help with funeral expenses. Luis Gonzalez-Quizhpe, a cousin, says, "Their lives were priceless."
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving. As we approach the holidays, let us remember the Gonzalez family and choose caution on the road.
