A 19-year-old, Khalil Malik McCraney, claimed self-defense after allegedly firing a semi-automatic rifle at a woman in her apartment complex. However, police, referring to surveillance footage, dispute his claim, stating the victim appeared unaware of his presence, indicating an ambush. Despite his assertion of firing about 10 times, investigators found 31 rounds at the scene.
Accusations extend to Khalil's father, Tyjuan Darryl McCraney, 44, supposedly involved in driving Khalil to the scene and providing the murder weapon. The victim sustained four gunshot wounds but survived.
Events unfolded when officers in Muncie, Indiana, responded to a shots fired call and later spoke to the victim at the hospital. Surveillance footage captured her arrival and parking at the complex, followed by Khalil's arrival and gunfire towards her while she sat in her car, shattering the driver's window.
Although the victim escaped, Khalil fled but was apprehended shortly after. Khalil justified his actions by alleging the woman had previously fired at his grandfather's home. However, police countered, stating the footage showed no return fire, suggesting an ambush from Khalil's positioning.
Despite Tyjuan's prior conviction barring him from owning firearms, he allegedly supplied the rifle, claiming to have heard Khalil say, "Imma take care of this now" upon spotting the woman.
Khalil faces charges of attempted murder and criminal recklessness, while Tyjuan faces charges of aiding, inducing, or causing an offense, conspiracy, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
