Former LA Deputy, Andrew Lyons Gets Probation in Unarmed Black Man's Shooting

Andrew Lyons, an ex-Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, faced manslaughter charges for fatally shooting 24-year-old Ryan Twyman in 2019. However, a recent plea deal spared him jail time. Lyons pleaded no contest to assault charges, resulting in a lighter sentence of probation and 30 days in jail.

District Attorney George Gascón stressed his unwavering commitment to holding everyone accountable, regardless of their profession. "Justice has been served for Mr. Twyman's family, who have endured immense grief," he said. "This verdict reflects our dedication to ensuring accountability for all."

On June 6, 2019, deputies approached Twyman's parked car. As he attempted to drive away, both Lyons and another deputy opened fire, stopping the vehicle. According to the district attorney, Lyons then retrieved a semi-automatic rifle and fatally shot Twyman.

Twyman's family, while acknowledging the conviction as a step forward, expressed their ongoing grief at a press conference. "We miss him dearly," said his mother, Tommi Twyman. "His absence leaves a void in our lives, especially for his three young boys."
