From Road Rage to Courtroom Drama: California Man Convicted of Killing 6-Year-Old Aiden Leos in Road Rage Incident

In a harrowing turn of events, Marcus Anthony Eriz, a 26-year-old resident of Costa Mesa, California, has been convicted in the tragic death of 6-year-old Aiden Leos, resulting from a road rage incident. A jury found Eriz guilty of second-degree murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and related felony enhancements. The potential consequence for this conviction is a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in state prison, with the sentencing scheduled for April 12.

The heart-wrenching incident unfolded on May 21, 2021, as Aiden and his mother, Joanna Cloonan, were driving along the 55 freeway. Eriz, accompanied by his girlfriend, Wynne Lee, cut off their vehicle, leading to a fatal confrontation. Aiden, on his way to kindergarten at Calvary Chapel in Yorba Linda, tragically lost his life.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer expressed the profound grief of a parent losing a child, describing Aiden's life as abruptly ended by a bullet that pierced his heart. The district attorney emphasized the commitment to seeking significant penalties for educators who engage in such misconduct.

During the trial, it was revealed that Aiden's mother had engaged in a road rage incident with Eriz and Lee just before the fatal shooting. Eriz, when testifying, provided no explanation for firing the weapon at Cloonan's vehicle, expressing a lack of forethought about the consequences.

Eriz's defense argued against intent to harm, claiming it was a voluntary manslaughter case. However, prosecutors countered, highlighting the severity of firing at a moving vehicle over a gesture.

Wynne Lee, Eriz's girlfriend, faces charges of accessory after the fact and having a firearm in a vehicle, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for Feb. 9.

This detailed account unravels the layers of a tragic road rage incident, exposing the devastating consequences and legal proceedings that follow.
