A Michigan woman's once-happy relationship turned into a chilling nightmare after her ex-boyfriend, refusing to accept the breakup, allegedly hatched a plan to kidnap her. George Mandarakas, 36, now faces federal charges for attempted kidnapping, thanks to a combination of his obsessive behavior, the victim's vigilance, and prompt action by law enforcement.
The drama began in 2019 when Mandarakas met the woman at the University of Notre Dame, lying about his age to appear younger. Their four-year relationship ended abruptly in October 2023 when the woman discovered his deception. Despite her clear request for no further contact, Mandarakas embarked on a bizarre, escalating campaign of stalking.
He bombarded her with texts and calls, stalked her at a salon, and even attempted to propose during a chance encounter. Unfazed by her friends' warnings, Mandarakas sent creepy gifts, including a laptop and old clothes, and made disturbing remarks about a podcast featuring a kidnapping.
The woman's family, fearing for her safety, discovered a hidden tracking device in her car and alerted the FBI. On Christmas Day, Mandarakas was caught lurking near a church she frequented, further solidifying suspicions.
Police found a treasure trove of evidence in Mandarakas' rental car: cash, multiple phones, tracking devices, maps for long-distance sailing routes, and a chilling supply list for a life on the run, including food, medicine, and a name change. The list even instructed him to ditch his old phones and activate new ones once he was "gone."
Inside his own car, authorities found a gun, ammunition, rope, a stun gun, and a tarp – all suggesting a terrifying plan to abduct the woman. Mandarakas was arrested and remains in jail as he awaits trial.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of obsessive behavior and the importance of taking immediate action when faced with stalking or threats. The victim's bravery and the swift response of law enforcement hopefully prevented a tragedy and brought justice one step closer.
