Outrage as Teacher Accused of Assaulting 4th Grade Girls Receives Probation: Father Expresses Disbelief

A former teacher from an elementary school in Connecticut recently struck a deal with prosecutors to sidestep a potentially lengthy prison sentence. James Eschert, aged 53, received a suspended sentence in New Britain Superior Court for admitting to one count of risk of injury to a minor, a felony charge.

This agreement followed previous accusations involving inappropriate behavior toward multiple girls who were his students over a span of years.

Instead of pleading guilty or no contest, Eschert entered an Alford plea, asserting innocence but acknowledging the state’s evidence. Despite avoiding immediate imprisonment, the looming threat of jail persists.

Judge Maureen Keegan sentenced him to five years of probation, coupled with a suspended 10-year jail term if he breaches the probation terms.

Eschert, an educator in the Plymouth school system since 1998, faced allegations brought to light in September 2021 by a former student to Principal Angela Suffridge about past misconduct.

Subsequently, on January 24, 2022, Plymouth police arrested Eschert following complaints of inappropriate conduct involving several juveniles who were his students at the time.

An investigation led to seven charges, ultimately condensed to one. Allegations surfaced, including instances where Eschert allegedly touched girls inappropriately, took explicit photos of them, and engaged in suggestive behavior during school hours.

Specific accusations pointed to Eschert’s alleged habit of inviting girls to sit on his lap, keeping them inside during recess, and taking sexualized photos. Some students claimed he encouraged decorating paper underneath his desk while inappropriately positioning himself. Other allegations included graphic descriptions of abuse.

While some educators were also arrested in connection to the case, there were claims that they overlooked the accusations against Eschert.

The sentencing received criticism from a father of one alleged victim during the hearing. Expressing dismay over the relatively lenient outcome, the father stressed the profound impact on the affected children, urging for a harsher penalty.

Despite the upset expressed by the father, the judge acknowledged the limitations of the legal system in providing adequate solace to victims and expressed her concern over the outcome for those unfamiliar with legal proceedings.
