Florida Mother Accused of Horrifying Treatment Towards Young Child

In Florida, a 28-year-old mother faces serious accusations of harming her young child both physically and mentally. Karyn S. Parrish was arrested on Tuesday, and charged with felony child abuse related to the reported mistreatment of the child.

The child, whose gender remains undisclosed by authorities, is described only as being under the age of five. According to a statement from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and investigators from the Department of Child and Family Services were called to conduct a welfare check around 1 p.m. on Tuesday at a residence in Seffner, Florida, approximately 10 miles east of Tampa. The identity of the individual who made the initial 911 call for the welfare check was not revealed.

Upon arrival, deputies found the young child exhibiting signs of distress, such as shaking and crying. The child had recently received a haircut and had a sizable bruise on their cheek, about two inches in diameter. When asked about the injury, the child allegedly implicated Parrish, stating, “Maybe my mom. Maybe she was slapping me around. She doesn’t remember things,” indicating that her mother often denies remembering her actions.

Investigators reported that Parrish admitted to slapping the child at least three times with her right hand. Additionally, disturbing videos were discovered on Parrish’s cellphone, showing her instructing one of her children to hit their sibling (the victim) with a belt. In one video, Parrish can be heard laughing and encouraging the child to hit harder.

Another video allegedly shows Parrish cutting the victim’s hair while making threatening remarks, indicating that the child would be subjected to eight hours of torture. Parrish is heard saying, “If they die, so be it.” Authorities did not specify the exact number of children in Parrish’s household, but they confirmed that all juveniles were removed and placed in the care of a relative.

Parrish was taken into custody without incident and remains in detention with a bond set at $7,500. Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge Catherine M. Catlin ordered that if Parrish is released, she is to have no contact with the victim or any other minor, including her own children.

Sheriff Chad Chronister expressed his dismay, stating, “It is absolutely gut-wrenching and incomprehensible to have a case like this, where a mother would inflict such horrifying treatment on her own children. My heart aches for these two young and innocent children.”
