Son Found Guilty of Brutally Murdering His Mother After Saying She Died Because of Her Health Problems

A man has been found guilty of killing his own mother after claiming her injuries were due to her health problems.

Steffon Hewitt, 51, who lives on Blake’s Road in Peckham, was convicted of murdering his mother, Vanita Nowell, 68, in March 2020, following a trial at Isleworth Crown Court. Vanita had moved from Barbados to the UK the year before to live with her son.

Detective Constable Nick Stocking, who was part of the team investigating the murder, stated, “Hewitt didn't show any remorse for causing his mother's death by causing her significant injuries. She endured 28 fresh rib fractures, six spinal fractures, extensive bruising on her face, head, and body, and suffered a traumatic brain injury, leading to a painful death."

Despite Hewitt’s claims that his mother's injuries were a result of her frequent falls due to dementia, forensic and medical evidence proved otherwise.

Emergency services were called to Hewitt’s home on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

He reported finding his mother unresponsive on the bathroom floor, and paramedics pronounced her dead upon arrival. Hewitt claimed he had performed CPR and may have caused some rib fractures, but medical examinations revealed that the extent of her injuries could not have been caused by CPR alone.

Hewitt is set to be sentenced on Tuesday, April 16, at Isleworth Crown Court.
