Man Faces Murder Charges Following Fatal Shooting of Gay Man at Florida Dog Park

A Florida man, Gerald Radford (65), has been arrested and charged with the second-degree murder of John Walter Lay (52). The shooting occurred at a dog park in Tampa on February 2nd.

Radford initially claimed self-defense, however, after a lengthy investigation, authorities believe the act was motivated by Lay's sexual orientation. Friends of Lay stated Radford had harassed him previously, including using homophobic slurs.

Samantha Hitchcock, a friend of Lay, reported witnessing Radford's verbal abuse on multiple occasions.  She emphasized Lay's peaceful nature, stating he would always walk away from confrontations.

Another friend, Kim Wolfley, shared a video sent by Lay on the day before the shooting. Lay described a disturbing encounter with Radford, who allegedly threatened him. Wolfley believes this video suggests premeditation.

"The evidence clearly showed this act stemmed from hatred," stated Sheriff Chad Chronister upon announcing Radford's arrest. He emphasized their community's commitment to inclusivity and intolerance of hate crimes.
