Elvin Baca, 34, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and failing to report a death.
This came after the body of his roommate, 69-year-old Lawrence Grabka, was found buried in a shallow grave in their shared backyard.
The grim revelation unfolded after a friend of Mr. Grabka reported him missing.
Concerned that he hadn't been returning calls and his home's door was unlocked, the friend contacted authorities.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office conducted a welfare check at the residence.
Sadly, their investigation took a tragic turn when meticulous forensic work uncovered evidence of a homicide.
Mr. Grabka's remains were located buried in a shallow grave on the property.
Following this discovery, Mr. Baca was arrested and denied bond.
He is currently awaiting trial at the New Hanover County Detention Facility.
