Florida College Student Charged with Mom's Murder: Sheriff Baffled by Motive

A college student in Florida is accused of brutally killing his own mother.

The victim, Elvia Espinoza (46), was a well-respected elementary school teacher.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd called the crime "unexplained and vicious."

The suspect, 21-year-old Emmanuel Espinoza, is a pre-med student at the University of Florida.

He reportedly turned himself in to police after the attack.

According to authorities, Emmanuel drove to his mother's home on Saturday.

They were planning a family gathering for a relative over the weekend.

Elvia reportedly allowed her son to stay at her house.

The sheriff's office reports that Emmanuel arrived in a white car.

When Elvia opened the door, he allegedly began stabbing her repeatedly.

Elvia, who was on the phone with a family member, tried to run away, but Emmanuel continued the attack until she died.

Shockingly, Emmanuel then called 911 himself.

The sheriff says he confessed to the crime immediately and has been cooperating with investigators.

Sheriff Judd shared that Emmanuel claimed to love his mother.

He even described their relationship as "pretty good," though details are unclear.

Elvia, a second-grade teacher at Ben Hill Griffin Elementary School, was cherished by the community.

Despite this, Sheriff Judd says Emmanuel confessed to wanting to kill his mother "for a long time" because she "got on his nerves."

Emmanuel is now facing charges of first-degree murder.
