One chilling detail emerged during the investigation.
According to an affidavit for an arrest warrant, witnesses reported that before the shooting, Rocco allegedly made a threatening statement.
He reportedly declared, "I've done 30 years [in prison]," followed by, "I'm not afraid of doing it again."
The investigation gained momentum thanks to a pivotal fourth witness.
This individual, who had been at the apartment earlier in the day, identified another witness who saw the entire ordeal.
This key witness provided a crucial piece of evidence: they saw Rocco enter the apartment, heard the gunshots, and then witnessed him flee on foot while holding a firearm.
Multiple tips also began pouring in, pointing toward Rocco as the perpetrator.
One identified witness even reported seeing Rocco enter the apartment, followed by gunshots and finally, his escape on foot with a gun in hand.
The elusive fourth witness was finally located on March 30th. Their account painted a clearer picture of the events.
They reported that Rocco arrived unannounced, barged into the apartment, and immediately began arguing with Byrd about taking the woman out for the evening.
The situation escalated quickly, with Rocco allegedly reaching for a gun he was holding.
Byrd remained unarmed and raised his hands in surrender.
Despite this, Rocco allegedly fired five shots at close range, fatally wounding Byrd.
The witness further stated that the woman in question remained emotionless throughout the ordeal, while another witness simply stood frozen in the kitchen.
Understandably shaken, the fourth witness also fled the scene after the shooting.
Following the investigation, Rocco was arrested and booked into Bexar County Jail on a $150,000 bond. He faces a single count of murder.
According to local news reports, Rocco has a criminal history dating back to 1983.
An official indictment in this case is still pending.
