A decade-old murder investigation in Minneapolis has taken a dramatic turn with the arrest of a suspect.
Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali, 30, now faces charges of second-degree murder in connection with the 2013 shooting death of 26-year-old Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed.
The crime occurred just before Halloween night, near the corner of Washington and 12th avenues south.
Investigators discovered Haji-Ahmed fatally shot in the driver's seat of a running vehicle, with multiple gunshot wounds to his head.
The evidence pointed towards the shots coming from the backseat, suggesting a close-range attack.
The investigation initially hit a dead end.
Authorities learned Abdulkadir Ali fled the state, possibly to Somalia, shortly after the shooting.
This, coupled with a lack of leads, caused the case to go cold for years.
However, in 2022, a crucial tip reignited the investigation.
A woman came forward claiming Abdulkadir Ali had contacted her on the day of the murder.
In this conversation, he allegedly confessed to the shooting and admitted the need to leave the country due to being captured on camera at the crime scene.
This new information spurred detectives to action.

By March 2024, they discovered Abdulkadir Ali's return to the United States, residing in Fargo, North Dakota.
Authorities swiftly obtained a warrant for his DNA and compared it to a torn jacket sleeve found at the murder scene.
Shockingly, the DNA matched, providing a significant piece of evidence.
Considering Abdulkadir Ali's past flight risk, prosecutors initially filed the charges under seal.
Finally, on May 1st, authorities apprehended and booked him into jail.
This arrest brings long-awaited hope for justice for Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed and his loved ones.
