Michigan Man Convicted in Deadly Love Triangle Shootout

A 48-year-old Michigan man has been found guilty of killing his wife during a shootout at her lover's home.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its dramatic and tragic nature.

Matthew Louis Mollicone was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, assault with intent to murder, and three counts of felony firearm.

His wife, 49-year-old Kimberly Ann Mollicone, was killed, and her former lover, Daniele Giannone, was injured.

Mollicone faces a potential life sentence for the assault charge, 15 years for voluntary manslaughter, and six years for the firearm offenses.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 10.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido stated, "The jury's convictions hold the perpetrator accountable for his actions and bring closure to the loved ones left behind."

Details of the case reveal a yearslong affair between Kimberly Mollicone and Giannone, which her husband believed had recently resumed.

Defense attorneys argued that Giannone should be charged with murder since he fired the fatal shot, while prosecutors contended that Mollicone instigated the dangerous situation.

On July 12, 2022, the incident unfolded when Matthew and Kimberly Mollicone drove to Giannone's home around 9:30 p.m.

Located in Ray Township, an hour north of Detroit, Giannone was outside cooking on his barbecue when the couple arrived.

A verbal altercation quickly escalated into a gunfight, with both men firing handguns.

Giannone was hit in the leg and retreated into his home to retrieve another weapon.

As the Mollicones retreated to their vehicle, more shots were exchanged, and Kimberly Mollicone was fatally struck near the neck.

The entire incident lasted less than two minutes, leaving multiple family members of Giannone "trapped inside the home out of fear."

Investigators found over 30 shell casings from three guns at the scene.

Giannone testified that he did not understand why Mollicone was there and felt threatened. "I told him I didn’t know what he was there for," Giannone testified. "I said, ‘Get out or I’ll blow your f—— head off.’"

The chaos of the shootout was captured in 911 calls.

In one call, a woman screamed, "I need somebody here right now! Somebody just keeps shooting at my house. My brother’s shot! My sister-in-law is in the house with my kids, bunkered down. My father and mother are here!"

Matthew Mollicone also made a 911 call during the incident, telling the dispatcher, "A man came out of his house and shot my wife. Send an ambulance now. My wife’s been shot. She’s unresponsive."

Kimberly Mollicone’s obituary painted a picture of a devoted mother and active community member.

"Kimberly played many roles in her family, business, and community," the obituary read. "Her most treasured role was Mom. She was highly active in her children’s lives in many ways — their faith, their school, and their many sports. Kimberly was an integral part of the family business. In recent years, Kimberly started practicing and enjoying yoga. Kimberly was very active and passionate about contributing to the recovery community. Her heart was wide open to anyone that needed it."
