Body Found at Used Car Lot May Belong to Missing Mississippi Woman, Samantha Elisabeth McCowan

A body found at a used car lot may belong to a woman who vanished after crashing her car, Mississippi deputies reported to news outlets.

Authorities made the grim discovery on Monday, June 10, at Luis Auto Sales on Highway 184 in Laurel.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation Crime Scene Unit was called in to assist with the investigation.

The remains were found in the trunk of a vehicle on the lot, according to WDAM, citing Sheriff Joe Berlin.

Investigators suspect it may be connected to the disappearance of 32-year-old Samantha Elisabeth McCowan.

“More than likely, it’s going to be her,” Berlin told the station.

McCowan was last seen around 1 a.m. on Friday, June 7, after her car crashed near Mississippi Highway 184, deputies said.

Following the collision with a power pole, McCowan reportedly walked away from the scene and hasn’t been seen since.

Deputies found her cell phone inside the car and stated that she hadn't had "any means of electronic communications" since the early morning crash.

State and local agencies, including Mississippi Emergency Management, spent the weekend thoroughly searching the area in hopes of locating the missing woman, according to a news release.

Crews conducted extensive ground and aerial searches using drones, but after a three-day effort, they found no trace of McCowan.

Authorities also requested that residents and businesses in the area review their security camera footage for any signs of McCowan.

As of June 11, the body found at the used car lot had not been identified.

The investigation remains ongoing.
