A 23-year-old man from Louisiana was arrested this week and he is accused of killing his grandparents.
Colby Stokes allegedly shot them inside their home, then went to a neighbor’s house and confessed.
He was taken into custody on Wednesday evening and faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Beverly Stokes and Carley Stokes.
Alongside the murder charges, Colby Stokes is also accused of cruelty to animals, second-degree aggravated battery, and illegally possessing a firearm as a felon.
Initially charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, the charges were upgraded by authorities on Thursday.
The sad incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, July 3, at the grandparents’ home in Mount Hermon, Louisiana.
Washington Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home following a 911 call reporting that their neighbor, identified as Stokes, had confessed to killing his grandparents.
Upon arrival, deputies found the elderly couple inside the home, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Carley Stokes was pronounced dead at the scene, while Beverly Stokes was transported to a hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.
Colby Stokes remained at the scene with the neighbor who called 911 until deputies arrived and placed him under arrest.
Washington County Sheriff Jason Smith revealed that Colby Stokes admitted to the killings during a recorded interview with detectives.
Stokes had previous encounters with the law, including a 2018 arrest for burglary when he was 17, accused of stealing multiple firearms.
Sheriff Smith mentioned Stokes had a history of legal issues, mental health struggles, and substance abuse problems.
He said the situation is very hard for the family because they are dealing with both being victims and the crime itself.
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the murders.
A family friend shared a statement with WWL expressing their grief and emphasizing the tragic nature of the loss of two beloved individuals.
Colby Stokes is currently held in custody without bond.
