In Harris County, Texas, 18-year-old Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam has been arrested and charged with a serious crime.
She is accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster shortly after giving birth.
Cux-Ajtzalam has been charged with a felony for abandoning a child.
The crime happened on Sunday July 21, 2024.
Cux-Ajtzalam, who works at a food truck, is reported to have given birth on the ground behind her workplace in Houston.
Authorities have stated in a probable cause document that the baby was born on the same day it was found.
After the birth, Cux-Ajtzalam reportedly placed the newborn, along with its umbilical cord and placenta, into a trash bag.
She then threw the bag into a dumpster.
A passerby who heard the baby crying called 911, resulting in the baby being rescued and rushed to the hospital immediately.
Fortunately, the baby received medical care, but the exact condition is still unclear at the moment.
Cux-Ajtzalam was arrested later that week.
During questioning, she reportedly told police that she abandoned her child because she did not want to lose her boyfriend.
According to the affidavit, she reportedly said she felt she had "no other choice" to avoid a breakup.
The entire troubling incident was recorded by nearby surveillance cameras, but details about the footage have not been released.
In court, a judge commented on how lucky it was that the child was rescued
He also emphasized how crucial the passerby’s quick action was.
Currently, a Harris County magistrate has now issued a protective order against Cux-Ajtzalam, keeping her at least 200 feet away from the child.
In a recent development, Cux-Ajtzalam’s bond was increased from $90,000 to $200,000.
This change follows the reclassification of her charge to a third-degree felony for abandoning a child with no intention of returning.
Besides the legal proceedings, Cux-Ajtzalam is considered a flight risk because she has few ties to the country.
The case is ongoing and has major implications for everyone involved.
