Samantha Murphy, a devoted wife and mother of three who loved running, disappeared without a trace on February 4, 2024, while on her usual morning jog.
Even after several searches and the community coming together for answers, Samantha is still missing.
Who Is Samantha Murphy?
Samantha Murphy was born on March 30, 1972 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
She lived with her husband, Michael Murphy, and their three children in Ballarat, a large rural city in Victoria.
Together, the Murphys operated a small business near their home.
Described as a dedicated mother and a health-conscious individual, Samantha was a regular runner who enjoyed the local bushland.
She usually went on a daily morning run to keep fit.
Sadly, Samantha Murphy went missing on February 4, 2024, during her routine morning run.
The police believe her disappearance was suspicious and they say she was likely murdered.
Although a man has been arrested for her disappearance and charged with murder, Murphy's body is still missing.
Day of Disappearance
On the evening of February 3, 2024, Samantha Murphy had dinner with her husband and friends.
She mentioned that she planned to run 14 kilometers in Woowookarung Regional Park the next morning.
At approximately 7 AM AEDT on February 4, she was captured on CCTV leaving her driveway, ready for her run.
She was expected to attend a family event at 11 AM but never arrived.
It was at this point her family reported her missing.
Investigation
Victoria Police, along with various search and rescue teams launched an extensive search operation.
Using helicopters, dogs, and ground crews, they searched the Woowookarung Regional Park and surrounding areas.
Despite the massive effort, no trace of Samantha or her belongings was found.
Murphy's mobile phone pinged a tower in Buninyong, 14 kilometers from her home.
Her Apple Watch, which was equipped with an SOS function, was not activated.
GPS data indicated she had run 7 kilometers before an anomaly disrupted the signal.
This "disturbance" suggested a possible altercation or abduction.
On May 29, Murphy's wallet, which had her ID and mobile phone, was found on the bank of a dam.
This wallet was found during a search of a property near Durham Lead, about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) south of Buninyong.
Potential Suspects
1. Patrick Orren Stephenson: In March 2024, Patrick Orren Stephenson, a 22-year-old from Scotsburn, was arrested and charged with Murphy's murder.
Police believe Stephenson, who didn't know Murphy or her family, killed her at Mount Clear.
At first, the court ordered that Stephenson's identity be kept secret, but this order was later removed.
2. Unknown Attacker: Before Samantha went missing, a woman was attacked while running in Lal Lal State Forest on February 11, 2023.
This was approximately 20 kilometers from where Samantha Murphy went missing.
The unidentified assailant used a rock tied to a stick to knock the woman unconscious.
This attack made people suspect it might be connected to Murphy's disappearance which happened a year later.
Ongoing Investigation
Samantha Murphy's disappearance brought the local community together and spurred them into action.
People from Ballarat and other places volunteered to help with the search.
They used social media platforms like Facebook to coordinate their efforts, but unfortunately, these platforms became breeding grounds for various theories and speculations.
The police warned that such actions could impact their ongoing investigations because of misinformation.
As a result, the person who created the Facebook page decided to archive it.
Forensic psychologist Tim Watson-Munro described the case as highly unusual and distressing.
As the search and Investigation for Samantha Murphy continues, there's a feeling of uncertainty weighing heavily over Ballarat.
Although a suspect has been charged with the murder, Samantha's body has not been found.
Her family and the community are still hoping for answers and closure.
