A Florida man, Fidel Lopez, was sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Maria Nemeth, in September 2015.
The details of the scene from that night were described as highly disturbing.
Fidel Lopez's uncontrollable rage resulted in a crime that surprised both the public and law enforcement.
Love Turned Tragic: The Background of Maria Nemeth and Fidel Lopez
Maria Nemeth, 31, and Fidel Lopez, 26, appeared to be a regular couple.
They lived together in an apartment in Sunrise, Florida.
Maria Nemeth had been married before she met Fidel Lopez.
Tragically, it was the name of her ex-husband that led Lopez to murder her on that fateful day.
Lopez and Nemeth reportedly spent most of their time drinking together in their apartment.
The night of the tragedy was no different.
The couple had consumed plenty of alcohol as they had done many times before.
However, an innocent mistake during a sexual encounter resulted in an unimaginable horror no one could have foreseen.
The Night of Horror: What Led to the Murder
The night of September 20, 2015, started like many others for Lopez and Nemeth.
They drank some tequila and engaged in what Lopez described as "rough sex."
According to Lopez, Nemeth was so drunk that she was nearly unconscious.
While they had sex, Nemeth made a fatal mistake.
She called out her ex-husband's name not once, but twice.
This made Lopez extremely angry.
Lopez claimed that hearing Nemeth call out her ex's name turned him into a "monster."
What followed was a brutal attack.
In a fit of uncontrollable rage, Lopez began destroying the apartment.
He punched holes in the walls, shattered a glass sliding door, and broke down a closet door.
But his anger didn't stop there.
Lopez then returned to Nemeth who was unconscious, and subjected her to an unbelievable assault.
Fueled by rage and alcohol, Lopez inserted various objects, including a tequila bottle, into Nemeth's private part.
After that, he then used his hands to pullout her intestines in a violent and senseless act.
Lopez later admitted to investigators that, after realizing the extent of what he had done, he attempted to revive Nemeth.
He said he splashed water on her face in the bathroom, but she remained unresponsive.
He then stepped onto the balcony to smoke a cigarette, trying to calm himself down as he was panicked.
When he returned to check on Nemeth, she was still not breathing.
Fidel Lopez then called 911 for help, claiming that Nemeth was having difficulty breathing.
Uncovering the Brutal Truth: The Investigation
When police arrived at the scene, they found a shocking display of violence and destruction throughout the apartment.
There were holes in the walls, broken glass from the shattered sliding door, and pools of blood scattered across the apartment.
Officers found Nemeth's naked body in the bathroom, lifeless and surrounded by blood.
The crime scene was so gruesome that pieces of bloody tissue were found throughout the apartment.
Lopez was found crying and pleading for help beside Nemeth's body, trying to cover up the mess.
Initially, Lopez claimed that Nemeth had simply fallen unconscious during sex and was having trouble breathing.
However, the detectives soon realized there was much more to the story.
After an extensive interview with detectives, Fidel Lopez confessed to the crime, detailing his violent rage.
He admitted that Nemeth’s mention of her ex-husband’s name drove him to commit the murder.
He described in detail how his rage led him to disembowel Nemeth.
This detail shocked even the most seasoned officers.
His graphic description of how he mutilated her body, removing her intestines, was almost too horrific to believe.
As investigators dug deeper into the case, they gathered all the disturbing evidence of the attack.
Lopez's confession was corroborated by the brutal physical evidence discovered throughout the apartment.
A Plea for Mercy: The Courtroom and Sentencing
Fidel Lopez was initially charged with first-degree murder and sexual battery following his arrest.
During the early stages of the legal proceedings, Lopez pleaded not guilty.
However, after realizing the gravity of his actions and the overwhelming evidence against him, Lopez eventually pleaded guilty.
He did this in order to avoid the death penalty.
After the trial, Judge Ilona Holmes sentenced Fidel Lopez to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Under the terms of his plea agreement, Lopez cannot appeal his sentence.
During the sentencing hearing, Lopez made an emotional statement.
He apologized to Nemeth’s family and expresed remorse for his actions.
He admitted that he deserved to pay for the life he had taken and asked for forgiveness.
Maria Nemeth's uncle spoke on behalf of her family.
He stated that only God would decide Lopez's ultimate fate.
Although Lopez’s life was spared from the death penalty, his sentence ensures that he will spend the rest of his life in prison for the heinous crime he committed.
