Adlai Mestre's case: Man Who Killed Three Family Members in Tijeras Tries to Escape from Interrogation Room

In Tijeras, New Mexico, 24-year-old Adlai Mestre is accused of a disturbing crime —murdering his entire family.

The tragic events unfolded on October 13, 2024, when Adlai Mestre fatally shot his mother, father, and 17-year-old sister in Tijeras.

After his arrest, he even tried to escape from the interrogation room but he was apprehended shortly.

According to multiple reports, Mestre had a history of mental health issues.

Adlai Mestre's arrest

A year before the murders, he had received treatment at the Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerque for undisclosed reasons.

While at the hospital, Mestre reportedly did not show signs of homicidal or suicidal thoughts.

However, family members later disclosed that Mestre had stopped taking his medication in the months before the murders, claiming he was hearing voices.

His older sister, who was not at the home during the killings, confirmed that Adlai had been “hearing voices” and that she had been “getting on his case” about taking his medication.

Adlai Mestre's Disturbing Confession

On the afternoon of October 13, 2024, deputies responded to the Mestre home after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots.

Upon arrival at the residence located on 55 Young Road, officers found Mestre covered in blood, holding a gun and ammunition.

Mestre then reportedly made several “excited utterances,” including admitting to killing his family.

As a result, deputies detained him immediately.

He claimed that he had shot his mother, 51-year-old Bertha, his father, 46-year-old Raymundo, and his 17-year-old sister, Brielle.

Mestre also confessed to killing the family dog.

He said the dog was “ravenous” and needed to be put down.

The victims were later found face down in a ravine about 50 yards from the house, with deputies noting signs of both gunshot wounds and possible stabbings.

Mestre admitted to dragging the bodies outside and attempting to clean up the crime scene.

Inside the home, investigators found a knife and a meat tenderizer hammer near the front door, both of which appeared to have blood on them.

The Investigation and Interrogation Room Incident

While in custody, Mestre exhibited erratic behavior.

He scribbled notes about "seismic waves" and claimed that he had shot at cell towers.

These delusional statements raised serious concerns about his mental state.

In a moment that would soon go viral, Mestre attempted to escape from the interrogation room at the BCSO substation.

Video footage from the scene shows Mestre kicking a hole in the wall of the room.

He then tried to make his way out while officers were momentarily distracted.

His escape was short-lived, as deputies quickly apprehended him in the hallway.

In the footage, Mestre is also seen praying, muttering to himself, and even expressing remorse.

His escape attempt, combined with his erratic behavior and the troubling contents of his notes, raised questions about his ability to stand trial and his overall mental health.

Justice: What Lies Ahead for ?

As of now, Adlai Mestre remains in custody, facing multiple charges related to the murders and his escape attempt.

He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, four counts of tampering with evidence, one count of extreme cruelty to animals, and one count of escape from a peace officer.

The authorities have yet to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

His motives for the killings as of now is still unknown.

Meanwhile, the community of Tijeras continues to grapple with the shock and horror of the crimes.

The Carrie Tingley Hospital Foundation has set up a scholarship in honor of Brielle Mestre, the 17-year-old victim.

She was remembered for her qualities of “inclusion, leadership, and kindness.”

The scholarship aims to keep her spirit alive by helping children who embody the same values she held dear.

As the investigation continues and justice is sought, we will be watching closely to see how the legal system navigates these complex issues.
