An investigation is currently underway to determine what led to the death of a man found inside a tanning bed at a Planet Fitness gym in Indianapolis.
His body was discovered three days after he first entered the facility.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call around 8:30 a.m. on Monday reporting a deceased person at the Planet Fitness location.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office later identified the man as 39-year-old Derek E. Sink.
According to police documents obtained by 13News, Sink’s family last spoke with him on Friday and reported him missing by Sunday.
Authorities confirmed to Fox News Digital that they were investigating a death at the gym but did not provide further details.
A woman who was at the gym on Monday morning told 13News that she and other members noticed a strong odor in the building, which intensified near the tanning area.
“The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?” questioned Elizabeth Len, a gym member.
Sink’s family revealed to 13News that he had a history of drug use, and a needle was reportedly found in the room with him.
His aunt also mentioned that he was wearing an ankle monitor, which helped investigators confirm that he never left the gym after entering.
Planet Fitness issued a statement to Fox News Digital.
They expressed their condolences and confirmed their cooperation with local authorities.
“We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members. The franchise owner is collaborating with local authorities in their investigation.
At Planet Fitness, we have stringent brand protocols in place to prioritize the safety and well-being of our members,” said McCall Gosselin, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Planet Fitness.
Sink’s family has called for stricter cleaning protocols and an end-of-day checklist by staff to prevent such incidents in the future.
The exact circumstances surrounding Sink’s death are still being investigated.
