Who is Adji Desir?
Adji Desir was a bright, happy six-year-old who was affectionately loved by his family.
Born on October 15, 2002, Adji was an autistic child who had developmental disabilities that left him functioning at the level of a two-year-old.
His limited vocabulary made communication challenging.
He could only understand Haitian Creole but couldn't speak as he was almost entirely nonverbal.
Adji stood 3 feet tall, and weighed 45 pounds, according to Charlie's Project.
He was last seen wearing a blue shirt with yellow stripes, blue shorts adorned with pink flamingos, and two-tone blue sneakers.
His mother, Neida, often described him as a "good boy" who loved playing outside and interacting with children in their community.
He lived in Farm Worker Village, a tight-knit community where everyone knew each other, which only deepened the shock of his sudden disappearance.
At the time of his disappearance, his father, Antal Elant was in Haiti which is where Adji is originally from.
So Adji lived with his mother and grandmother in Immokalee, FL when he mysteriously vanished.

How Did Adji Desir Disappear?
Adji Desir mysteriously disappeared on January 10, 2009, a day like any other in Farm Worker Village.
After dinner, he went outside to play with friends near his grandmother’s home while she remained inside.
Around 5:30 PM, Adji vanished.
When family members realized he was missing, panic ensued.
Adji’s mother, who had been working, returned home late that night to find her family in tears.
Despite frantic efforts to locate him, no trace of Adji was found.
His family, assuming he was nearby, continued searching the area before contacting authorities later that evening.
Investigation and Search Efforts
Adji Desir’s developmental disability and tendency to hide from strangers created a significant hurdle for search efforts.
According to police reports, Adji might have understood he was lost but lacked the ability to seek help or approach a stranger for assistance.
The search for Adji began immediately and involved hundreds of volunteers, law enforcement officers, and specialized teams.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, worked tirelessly to follow every lead.
Crime scene investigators meticulously searched every corner of Farm Worker Village, but Adji was nowhere in sight.
Key Steps in the Investigation included:
- Extensive searches: Authorities combed through a 16-mile radius of Adji’s grandmother's home using helicopters, ATVs, and horseback teams to navigate the rugged terrain. Canals, wooded areas, and mangroves were meticulously examined.
- Community involvement: Volunteers distributed fliers in English, Spanish, and Creole, hoping someone might recognize Adji.
- Crime scene investigations: Officers from the local police department thoroughly scoured local neighborhoods. They questioned residents and searched the homes of known sex offenders in the area.
Despite these efforts, there were no solid leads.
By January 14, 2009, criminal investigators began to consider the possibility of abduction.
“We are conducting a parallel investigation for a missing child and a possible abduction,” said Sheriff Kevin Rambosk during a press briefing.
Despite over 200 tips and interviews with residents, including registered sex offenders, no solid leads emerged.
The search for Adji even garnered national attention, with his case featured on shows like America’s Most Wanted

Possible Theories in Adji Desir’s Disappearance
Adji’s disappearance sparked numerous theories:
- Wandering and Hiding: Due to his limited communication skills, some believe Adji may have wandered into the nearby wilderness and inadvertently hid from searchers. They believe he may have succumbed to the harsh elements or nearby wildlife. However, the extensive search of the area makes this theory less likely.
- Abduction by unknown person: The possibility of abduction became a central focus as search efforts failed to locate him within the area. The involvement of known offenders in the region was also investigated, but no conclusive links were found.
- Family Abduction: Speculation arose within the community that Adji Desir was kidnapped and taken back to his home country, Haiti. However, all his family members were cleared after an extensive investigation
