Christina Formella: Illinois Special Needs Teacher Arrested for Sexually Abusing 15-Year-Old Student

Christina Formella, a married special education teacher has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a 15-year-old student in Illinois.

This tragic criminal case involves the betrayal of trust in one of the most vulnerable settings: a special needs classroom.

Here’s what we know so far.

Who Is Christina Formella?

She had been working in the school’s special services department since the 2020-21 school year.

Her main job was to help students with learning disabilities and emotional challenges.

She was also a soccer coach for both boys’ and girls’ teams, so this put her in close contact with teenagers outside the classroom.

Formella was married to her college sweetheart, a former baseball player at Concordia University Chicago.

She was a dedicated educator according to everybody who knew her —until March 16, 2025, when everything changed.

How the Abuse Was Discovered

It all began when the mother of a 15-year-old student bought her son a new phone, as reported by PEOPLE.

While setting it up for her child, she stumbled upon explicit text messages between him and Formella.

The messages detailed a sexual relationship that allegedly started in December 2023, when Formella was teaching the boy alone in a classroom before school.

Some of the messages included:

> “I love you sooooo much baby… Even though this morning was short, it was perfect.”

> “I love having sex with you.”

Shocked and horrified, the boy’s mother confronted her son about the inappropriate messages.

Together, they went to the Downers Grove Police Department to file a report against Formella.

The Criminal Investigation & Arrest

Police immediately launched a full-scale investigation, including:

1) Reviewing text messages & digital evidence

2) Interviewing the victim and possible witnesses

3) Examining school security logs to confirm if Formella was ever alone with the student

Extensive investigations ultimately revealed that the alleged abuse was going on for over a year before being discovered.

On March 16, 2025, officers pulled Formella over in a traffic stop and arrested her, as seen in the YouTube video below this post.

When questioned, she maintained her innocence claiming she did nothing wrong.

Christina Formella now faces serious charges even though she denied the allegations.

The Charges Against her include:

1) One count of Criminal Sexual Assault (a Class 1 felony)

2)Two counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse (Class 2 felonies)

If convicted, she could face many years in prison and mandatory registration as a sex offender.

The Aftermath and The School's response

The news of this disturbing alleged abuse sent shockwaves through Downers Grove South High School.

Principal Arwen Lyp sent an emotional email to parents, writing:

“We are devastated, and our community is reeling. An adult has been charged with the most serious of violations, and trust has been broken.”

The school took immediate action and placed Formella on paid administrative leave.

She has also been banned from school grounds, according to PEOPLE.

The school has also reached out to families of students who had contact with her to make sure there are no additional accusations.

Parents are now asking one crucial question: How could this happen in a special needs program?

As a special education teacher, Formella worked with Vulnerable Students.

She was trusted to care for children who may struggle to report any form of abuse.

Also, coaches and tutors have a major influence over students, making this case even more exploitative.
