In Ohio, Gary Thomas “Tom” Keesee Jr. is facing serious criminal charges after being accused of committing sex crimes that span nearly two decades.
Thomas is the son of Gary and Drenda Keesee, founders of Faith Life Church, a well-known megachurch in Ohio.
A grand jury has indicted him on 32 counts, including 13 counts of rape, and some of the alleged victims were as young as five years old, as

The Disturbing Allegations
According to the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, Tom Keesee’s alleged crimes happened between 2001 and 2012.
The criminal complaint outlines disturbing claims from several victims, all of whom were minors and members of Faith Life Church at the time.
Shockingly, one of the allegedly victims was his sister, Kirsten McKinney, as reported by Christian Post.
She was one of the first to come forward, posting about the abuse on social media even before the investigation started.
The criminal complaint also states that Keesee sexually assaulted her on more than 50 occasions between May 2001 and May 2003.
The assaults allegedly took place at their family residence in Mount Vernon, Knox County, as well as inside a vehicle.
Keesee was 12 years old when the abuse started and 14 when it ended, as per the criminal complaint.
After the disturbing allegations from his sister, another accuser came forward and accused the pastors son of abusing her from when she was was 8 years old.
A third victim came forward during the investigation, alleging that Keesee exposed himself to her and forced her to touch his private areas.
A fourth accuser reported that Keesee assaulted her when she was between 10 and 11 years old.
According to the victim, the pastors son allegedly placed his hand inside her bathing suit while they were riding a dirt bike together.
The criminal complaint states that these incidents happened in different places around Knox and Licking counties, but not inside the church.
Licking County Prosecutor Jenny Wells confirmed the investigation included interviews with about 40 witnesses, and the charges are based on allegations from these confirmed victims.
The criminal complaint also notes that Keesee was between 12 and 23 years old during the period in which the alleged crimes occurred.

Conflicts of Interest in The Criminal Case
When the first allegations came up, the victim’s family went to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in late 2023 to ask for an investigation.
However, Sheriff Daniel Weckesser stepped away from the case, saying there would be a conflict of interest because the accused’s mother, Drenda Keesee, is a Knox County Commissioner who helps with the sheriff’s office budget..
The case was then referred to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), but Attorney General Dave Yost, who oversees BCI, also withdrew himself in February 2024.
Yost admitted he was personally friends with Gary and Drenda Keesee and said that being involved could make the case look biased, no matter the outcome.
This caused delays and confusion about who would handle the case until the public mounted pressure in 2024.
Over 2,500 people signed a Change.org petition demanding action, after which the Licking County Sheriff’s Office took up the investigation in early 2024.
Crimimal investigators further faced additional challenges due to the Keesees’ influence.
Faith Life Church made over 100 staff members sign nondisclosure agreements, which may have made it harder for witnesses to speak out.
At the same time, a lawyer connected to the church filed stalking protection orders against people on social media who talked about the case, but all those orders were later dismissed.
Also, some former church members claim Gary and Drenda Keesee knew about the allegations but did nothing.
However, despite these challenges, Licking County detectives carried out a thorough investigation and presented their findings to a grand jury, leading to an indictment.

The Legal Proceedings So Far
On April 18, 2024, the Licking County Sheriff’s Office arrested Keesee at his Johnstown home following a months-long investigation.
Initially, he faced only two counts of first-degree felony rape, but the charges expanded significantly after more witnesses came forward.
On April 21, 2024, the grand jury returned a 27-count indictment, including 11 counts of rape, 11 counts of gross sexual imposition, and five counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
Keesee appeared for his arraignment on April 23, 2024, in Knox County Common Pleas Court, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
His defense attorney, Sam Shamansky, acknowledged the gravity of the allegations but maintained his client’s innocence.
The prosecution requested a $5 million bond, citing the severity of the accusations and Keesee’s potential flight risk.
However, Judge Richard Wetzel set bail at $2 million, with additional conditions:
- Surrender of passport and driver’s license
- Mandatory GPS monitoring if the bond is posted
- No contact with victims or witnesses
In May 2025, five more charges were added, including two more counts of rape, bringing the total to 32 felony charges.
The former charges were for the first three victims but new charges were filed after the fourth victim came forward.
Keesee’s trial is scheduled for July 1, 2024.
The case has drawn a lot of attention, mainly because the Keesee family is well known and the church is accused of trying to hide the claims.
Prosecutors say the investigation is still ongoing, and more charges could be added if new evidence comes up.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, Keesee stepped down from his role as the head of Media at the church in August 2024.
