Gavin Peterson’s Death: 12-year-old Dies After He Was Starved, Beaten and Isolated By Family Members

In July 2023, 12-year-old Gavin Peterson from West Haven, Utah, died after suffering years of severe abuse and neglect from his own family.

His stepmother, Nichole Lea Scott, his father, Shane Peterson, and his older brother, Tyler Peterson, have all admitted guilt in connection to his tragic death.

What criminal investigators uncovered was deeply disturbing—a long history of mistreatment that included starvation and physical torment.

Let's get into the details

How Were the Petersons Apprehended?

The horrific abuse suffered by Gavin Peterson came to light on July 9, 2023,

That day, emergency responders were called to the family’s home in West Haven after someone reported that the 12-year-old was unresponsive.

Gavin was immediately rushed to the hospital by the first responders, but sadly he died at the hospital.

According to KSL News, the initial 911 caller claimed that Gavin had fallen in the bathtub and stopped breathing, but first responders immediately noticed signs of severe malnutrition.

His body was emaciated, his skin stretched over protruding bones, and medical personnel later confirmed his organs had shut down completely due to starvation.

After these disturbing findings, the local police department was notified about Gavin’s death and the suspected abuse.

Details Of The Abuse

During the investigation, crime scene investigators searched the home and found alarming evidence of long-term abuse.

Gavin’s bedroom stood out in a troubling way with a bare plywood floor, unlike his siblings' rooms which had carpets.

Investigators also found black vomit stains and a small taped-off area that appeared to be used as a confinement space.

Investigators noted that the door could only be locked from the outside, suggesting that Gavin was being locked inside and isolated.

Detectives also found deleted photos from a home surveillance camera on Shane Peterson’s phone, revealing chilling evidence of abuse, according to KSL News.

The child can be seen curling up on the carpet less floor of the room, which lacked bedding or blankets. Several screenshots also showed sores on the child’s back. The room appeared to have multiple cameras, as the infrared lights from other devices were visible in the screenshots,” the court documents stated.

According to police reports, text messages between his father Shane Peterson, stepmother Nichole Scott, and older brother Tyler Peterson revealed shocking details about Gavin’s abuse.

They talked about limiting him to just one-third of a cup of water each day, feeding him only bread with mustard, and sometimes not giving him any food at all as punishment.

In the messages, they used degrading names for him and admitted to beating Gavin brutally.

The only text messages regarding Gavin were of how much they hated him… and the torture they enjoyed putting him through.” —said prosecutors.

Further investigation showed that the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) had received multiple reports about Gavin’s abuse starting in 2020.

These reports included concerns from school officials before Gavin was withdrawn for "homeschooling" in August 2022.

Despite these warnings, no intervention prevented his death.

The local police department later confirmed that Gavin’s parents waited 21 minutes after realizing he wasn’t breathing before calling 911—during which time they removed surveillance cameras and tampered with evidence.

Criminal Investigations also revealed that Gavin sometimes ate his own feces when he couldn't hold the hunger anymore.

After an extensive investigation, Gavin’s father, stepmother, and brother were arrested and charged with his murder.

Justice For Gavin Peterson: The Trial And Sentencing

Nichole Lea Scott, Gavin’s stepmother, was the first to plead guilty in April 2024 to first-degree felony murder, three counts of aggravated child abuse, and two counts of obstruction of justice.

During her sentencing on May 13, 2024, Judge Camille Neider called Scott the "architect" of the abuse and gave her a prison sentence of 15 years to life.

Gavin’s father, Shane Peterson, pleaded guilty to child abuse homicide, three counts of aggravated child abuse, and child endangerment.

Prosecutors revealed that in monitored jail calls, Shane admitted he was pretending to show emotion in court, saying he had "pushed out a tear for the judge."

Judge Neider, visibly emotional, sentenced him to eight years to life in prison, calling him unworthy of the title "father."

Tyler Peterson, Gavin’s older brother, pleaded guilty under a mental illness defense.

His sentencing was delayed for a mental health evaluation, with a review hearing scheduled soon

Gavin’s bilogical mother, Melanie Peterson, told a KSL TV reporter that she lost custody of all four of her children around 2014 or 2015.

Court documents showed that in 2014, two-year-old Gavin was found alone outside their home, and Melanie pleaded guilty that year to allowing a child to be exposed to illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.

Melanie said she never officially regained custody of her children, but Shane Peterson unofficially returned her third child in 2018 and her second child in 2019.

Her first child was reportedly Tyler, who is charged in Gavin’s death, and Gavin was the fourth child.

All three defendants are now in jail, and their chance for parole will be decided by Utah’s Board of Pardons.
