Who Was Melanie James?
Melanie James was a Native American woman from Farmington, New Mexico, with Walker River Paiute and Comanche roots.
Those closest to her described her as a kind, spirited young woman with a playful sense of humor.
Her mother, Lela Mailman, remembered how Melanie loved to dance as a child.
She told NBC that Melanie and her sister, Melissa, would create and perform detailed dance routines for her when she came home from work.
In her teenage years, Melanie began hanging out with people her family described as a bad influence, which eventually led to legal troubles.
“She was hanging out with people that weren’t really good for her,” said Melissa.
“People that would just get her into substances and drinking" she added.
When she was 18, she briefly went to jail after she and some friends tried to steal jewelry, according to Oxygen True Crime.
However, after her release in November 2013, her family said she decided to turn her life around.
She showed interest in being a veterinary and was getting ready to enroll at San Juan College.
She also applied for jobs around Farmington at the time before she mysteriously disappeared.
At the time of her disappearance, Melanie was five feet tall and weighed 116 pounds.
She had a spade tattoo on her right hand, dark black hair, and a small chip in one of her front teeth.
Her mother told NBC that Melanie would often cover her mouth when laughing or smiling because of the chip in her tooth.
"When she smiled, she wouldn’t show her teeth," Lela explained. "When she laughed or smiled, she would kind of cover her mouth."

Her sister Melissa mentioned that while Melanie still had some ties to her old friends, she appeared truly focused on turning her life around when she went missing.

The Details of Her Dissappearance
On April 20, 2014, Melanie James missed a planned lunch with her mother, Lela Mailman, according to NBC.
Later that day, her sister, Melissa, unexpectedly ran into Melanie with an unidentified man, while driving to pick up her son
Melissa immediately stopped and spoke with her in the parking lot of a church in Farmington, New Mexico.
During their conversation, Melanie told Melissa that she planned to go to Albuquerque but wasn't carrying any personal belongings, including her phone.
Melanie then gave Melissa a phone number to reach her before she left with the unidentified man.
Melissa said that everything seemed normal during their conversation, as Melanie appeared fine, and the unknown man was just nearby.
However, after this encounter, Melanie stopped all contact with her family and friends.
There was no activity on her social media accounts after April 14, 2014, and her phone was last used on April 19, 2014.
Melissa initially wrote down the number Melanie gave her on her hand with a highlighter, but after washing her hands, the number was erased, leaving the family unable to reach her.
In September 2014, after five months with no contact, a worker at a Family Dollar store called Lela Mailman, and told her that Melanie was in the store at that moment.
Lela was at work at the time, so she sent her son to the store, but the person was gone before he arrived.
When leila got back, the store's management allowed her to watch the surveillance video, and she confirmed that it was Melanie.
The Family Dollar employee later described the encounter to Lela, saying Melanie was acting strangely, like somebody was watching her.
Sadly, after this sighting—which was never confirmed by police—Melanie was never seen again.
“We looked at the footage, and it was her,” Lela told NBC. “After that, we had no sightings of her.”
By the time law enforcement asked for the footage, it had already been automatically erased due to the store’s policy.
The Farmington Police Department could not independently verify the identity of the individual in the footage.

The Investigation Into Melanie James Disappearance
Melanie James was officially reported missing on June 12, 2014—53 days after her last confirmed sighting on April 20, 2014.
According to the Farmington Police, the delay in reporting affected the early investigation, and no official searches were done because of it.
Before the missing person report was filed, Melanie’s family had already made serious efforts to find her on their own.
According to Oxygen, Melanie’s sister Melissa quit her job and searched day and night for her.
When the family couldn’t find her, they went to the police for help.
During the investigation, Melissa told investigators she saw Melanie with an unknown man in a church parking lot on April 20.
She described him as a Black man, about 6 feet tall with a slim build, and he was wearing a navy blue muscle shirt, faded black pants, and black-and-white sneakers.
To this day, police have not been able to identify this man.

Meanwhile, on April 24, 2014, four days after Melanie was last seen, her purse was found in an alley near the intersection of Yucca Avenue and 20th Street.
Since Melanie had not been reported missing at the time, the responding officer classified the discovery as a "lost but found property" instead of evidence.
When the purse was searched, the police officer found two cell phones inside.
The officer then called the last number dialed from one of the phones, which led them to a man named Brian.
Brian told police that Melanie had been at his home on 21st Street on April 19, a day before her disappearance.
He said that she was drunk, and was knocking on peoples door, but that she left after someone called the police, according to Oxygen True Crime.
He later claimed to have received a call from Melanie about a week after her disappearance.
He claimed that she allegedly asked for money to return from Albuquerque, however, this could not be verified by the police.
When Melanie was reported missing, the purse was finally submitted for DNA testing in 2022 to look for any potential evidence.
But the lab declined to process it because it was not recovered from a crime scene.
Due to the lack of concrete evidence and the unknown identity of the last person seen with her, the case remains unsolved to this day.

Possible Theories in Melanie James' Disappearance
The circumstances surrounding Melanie James' disappearance have led to several possible explanations, each backed by specific details from the investigation.
1) Voluntary Disappearance: One theory suggests Melanie may have voluntarily disappeared.
During her last known conversation with her sister, Melanie said she wanted to leave Farmington for Albuquerque.
Brian, the last person who called her before she disappeared, claimed she later called him from Albuquerque asking for money to return.
She was also spotted five months after her disappearance in Farmington, a sighting confirmed by her family but not by the police.
However, this theory looks somehow impossible, because Melanie left behind important things like her purse and phone, which she would probably have taken if she planned to move.
Also, the fact that she suddenly stopped all contact with family and friends, despite her recent plans to go to college and find a job, makes it hard to believe she would have disappeared without a trace
2) Involvement of Her Exboyfriend:
At the time of her disappearance, Melanie was reportedly trying to leave an abusive relationship.
This has led some people to suspect that her ex-boyfriend may have been involved in Melanie’s sudden disappearance.
According to her family, Melanie's ex-boyfriend was controlling and had a history of violence against her.
In one incident, he reportedly hit her with his fists until she bled, and he was sent to jail for this crime.
Although police confirmed he was in jail at the time of her disappearance, his prior controlling behavior and the fact that he continued writing to Melanie while in jail, raises questions about potential indirect involvement.
The Family Dollar worker who saw her five months after her disappearance, mentioned that Melanie bought just one candy and appeared to be scanning her surroundings slowly, as if someone was watching or waiting for her.
Melissa, Melanie's sister, speculated that this nervous behavior could suggest Melanie was hiding from someone, possibly linked to her past relationship.
However, no direct evidence has linked the ex-boyfriend or his associates to her disappearance.
3) Foul Play By Unidentified Person
The most troubling theory suggests that Melanie may have been harmed by someone, possibly the unidentified man she was last seen with.
This man, described as a tall, slim Black male, has never been identified or come forward, even though the case has been public for years.
He was the last known person seen with Melanie before she disappeared.
According to police, the fact that no one has heard from Melanie or seen her in the last ten years makes it more likely that something bad happened to her, rather than her leaving on her own.
“We don’t have evidence of foul play… but after 10 years with no contact, we’re extremely concerned.” said Farmington Police Chief, Steve Hebbe.
While each theory sounds possible, the lack of solid evidence have made it hard for investigators to figure out exactly what happened to Melanie James.
The unidentified man remains the strongest possible lead in what has become one of Farmington's most troubling unsolved cases.

Ongoing Efforts: Will This Cold Case Ever Be Solved?
The investigation into Melanie James' disappearance remains open with the Farmington Police Department.
Detective Daven Badoni, who took over the case in late 2023, has been reviewing all available evidence related to the case.
The department believe that any new information from the public could prove crucial to advancing the case.
Melanie's family has worked tirelessly to keep attention on her disappearance.
They have also participated in events for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women to raise awareness.
The unidentified man seen with Melanie before she vanished remains a key focus of the investigation.
Authorities continue to seek information about this individual, described as a 6-foot-tall Black male with a slender build, short hair and a beard.
He was seen wearing a navy blue muscle shirt, faded black pants and black-and-white sneakers the day Melanie disappeared.
Also, advancements in forensic technology might help solve the case if Melanie's purse is tested again.
It wasn't tested before because there was no clear proof of a crime.
However, if investigative procedures change over time, police might take another look and possibly find answers that could help solve this cold case.
