In Louisiana, a 21-month-old toddler died from being left in a hot car for over nine hours, according to USA Today
The child’s father, Joseph Boatman, 32, is now charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.
According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office (STPSO), Boatman picked up his daughter from a family member’s home around 2:30 a.m. on June 8, 2025.
Detectives say he had been drinking earlier that night, consuming multiple alcoholic beverages.
Instead of driving off, he strapping the toddler into her car seat Boatman and went back inside the house and never returned to the vehicle.
The little girl remained buckled in her seat as temperatures outside climbed to 92 degrees, with the heat index reaching a dangerous 104 degrees.
It wasn’t until noon —nearly 10 hours later—that a family member noticed the child still in the car and called authorities.
Deputies arrived to find the toddler unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Randy Smith called the incident a "devastating loss" and warned of the dangers of leaving children in vehicles, especially during extreme heat.
"When a child is left in a vehicle, especially on a day when the heat index climbs over 100 degrees, the outcome can turn deadly in a matter of minutes," Smith said.
"This case involved compromised judgment, and the result was heartbreaking."
Boatman was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on June 8.
His bond was set at $750,000, and he remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
The small town of Madisonville, where the tragedy occurred, has fewer than 800 residents.
Neighbors and local officials have expressed shock and grief over the incident, emphasizing the need for awareness around hot car safety.
