A Michigan father has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his 19-month-old son.
Eugene Rantanen, 37, from L’Anse, received the sentence in August 2025 from U.S. District Judge Paul Maloney.
During the sentencing, the judge said Rantanen had treated his 19-month-old son, Carter, in a cruel and horrific way.

On February 19, 2024, Rantanen was alone with Carter at their home on the L'Anse Reservation when he frantically called 911.
He reported that the toddler was not breathing, as reported by Law&Crime.
He claimed he had simply put the boy down for a nap and later found him unresponsive just five minutes later.
When first responders, arrived, they rushed Carter to the hospital, but the doctors immediately noticed something was terribly wrong.
According to court documents, the little boy had bruises on his head and body, which looked like they were caused by fingertips.
Additionally, a CT scan revealed serious internal bleeding in his brain, as per Law&Crime.
Even after doctors at three different hospitals tried everything to save him, Carter didn't respond to treatment because his injuries were too severe.
Sadly, he passed away from his head injuries on February 24, 2024 — just five days after the 911 call.
Doctors later alerted police about Carter’s death, saying his injuries could not have been accidental.
They told criminal investigators that he had suffered an “abusive assault and inflicted trauma.”
His official cause of death was blunt-force trauma, and his death was ruled a homicide.
After the shocking revelation from the hospital, Rantanen was arrested and charged with his sons murder, even though he claimed he did nothing wrong.
During the trial, U.S. Attorney Timothy VerHey shared more heartbreaking details about the little boy's story.
"His birth mother had arranged for him to be adopted by a loving family," VerHey said.
"But Rantanen insisted on having custody of Carter and all evidence suggests that, instead of loving and doting on and caring for Carter, Rantanen subjected him to months of abuse and neglect," he added.
Prosecutors argued that Rantanen was the only person who could have caused these fatal injuries.
In the end, the jury agreed, and convicted him of murder and first-degree child abuse, as per official press release.
"The conviction of Eugene Rantanen further ensures the public that this child predator and murderer will never again have the opportunity to harm another innocent young soul," said Reuben Coleman of the FBI Detroit Field Office.
"The FBI in Michigan remains unwavering in protecting our children and reassuring our communities that justice will be served."
While the life sentence brings a measure of closure, it cannot undo the immense loss.
Additionally, court records show that Rantanen has already filed an appeal for his conviction.
