Authorities in Mississippi have confirmed that missing 3-year-old Janae McGill has been found dead in Alabama
This sad update is coming just a day after her mother, 32-year-old Shardee McGill, was discovered in the same area.
According to police reports, the tragedy began when Johnathon McGill reported his wife and daughter missing on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
He told investigators that Shardee and Janae left their Jackson home on Sunday night but never returned, as per Crime Online.
However, the police suspected foul play in the disappearance, especially after Shardee’s black Chevy Equinox was discovered near Epes, Alabama — about 140 miles away from Jackson.
On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Shardee’s body was found in a shallow body of water in that same area. The next day, search teams located her daughter’s body nearby.
So far, officials have not released the cause of death for either Shardee or Janae. They have also called the mother’s death “suspicious,” but no arrests have been made.
Authorities did confirm that Shardee’s husband, Johnathon, was questioned after her body was recovered and later released.
The discovery has shaken both Mississippi and Alabama communities, as people struggle to understand how a missing persons case could turn into a double tragedy.
Investigators are now urging anyone with information to come forward. Those with tips can reach the Jackson Police Department at 601-960-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 601-355-TIPS (8477).
