Amanda Dean: Huron County Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for 2017 Killing of his girlfriend

Nearly nine years after Amanda Dean vanished without a trace, a Huron County courtroom finally delivered a measure of justice. 

On Monday, January 5, 2025, Frederick Reer was sentenced to 14 years in prison for his role in the death of his girlfriend, a 36-year-old mother of four who disappeared in July 2017.

Dean’s body has never been found, but investigators say the evidence now clearly shows she was killed inside the home she shared with Reer.

Amanda Dean was last seen on July 11, 2017, in Collins, Ohio, as reported by news5cleaveland. 

According to her family, she was living with Frederick Reer at the time and was trapped in an abusive relationship.

Also, police reports from 2017 show that an anonymous caller warned authorities that Reer had threatened to kill her.

That same day she vanished, Dean sent a text message to her sister saying she planned to leave Reer, but after that message, she was never heard from again.

Her family reported her missing soon after they couldn't reach her.  However, just one day after the missing persons report was filed, authorities in Huron County canceled the report and told Dean’s family that she was “in a safe house"

For years, Dean’s loved ones questioned that explanation. They said it was unusual for Amanda not to have contacted them again, despite being close with her children and family.

At one point, an anonymous donor even offered a $5,000 reward for information, hoping to spark new leads.

In December 2022, after growing pressure from the family, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office officially reopened the case. Also, The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) was brought in to take a fresh look at the evidence

According to Cleveland 19, Huron county Sheriff issued the following statement in December 2022:

“On December 21, 2022, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office has officially reopened an investigation into Amanda D. Dean’s whereabouts. Ms. Dean entered into a safe house in 2017 and has not had contact with her family since. We have had conversations and a meeting with Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) agents and requested they review and continue the investigation. We have provided BCI with all the information available for their review.

Once it has determined who will officially be in charge of the investigation, that agency will designate an intermediary who will be the point of contact with the family. We will have no further comments during this investigation.”

In November 2023, criminal investigators executed a search warrant at a home in Collins which was owned by Reer’s father. 

BCI agents spent hours digging and sifting through the property, using crime scene tools and a cadaver dog.

That search eventually proved to be a major turning point even though law enforcement did not say what was found at the time. 

According to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, BCI found overwhelming evidence showing that Reer killed Dean inside their home.

They believe that after the crime, Reer likely cut up Dean’s body, burned it, and dumped the ashes into a nearby creek. Till today, her remains were never recovered.

Reer was eventually taken into custody on February 9, 2025, and he later pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, including:
  • Involuntary manslaughter
  • Gross abuse of a corpse
  • Tampering with evidence
On January, 5, 2025, Reer was sentenced in the Huron County Court of Common Pleas to 14 years in prison, just short of the maximum possible sentence.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost called the outcome a hard-fought victory for justice

“With today’s sentence, a killer has been brought to justice,” Yost said. “I pray Amanda’s family finds a measure of peace knowing the man responsible for her death is behind bars,” said 

While Reer is now behind bars, Amanda Dean’s family still faces the painful reality that her body hasn’t been found. For them, the sentence brings accountability, but not closure.
