A Detroit man shocked onlookers when he allegedly used a blowtorch to set a gas station on fire after engaging in an argument with the clerk.
Startling video footage depicts the horrifying incident, which occurred on West Seven Mile Road around 2:50 a.m. on June 20, 2023
The video, captured by surveillance cameras installed as part of the Project Green Light initiative, reveals the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Julian Waddell Miller, entering the gas station kiosk carrying a trash can and a blowtorch.
Clad in a white T-shirt and colorful shorts, Miller dumps the contents of the bin onto the floor before engaging in a heated exchange with the 27-year-old clerk, who remains off-camera.
Without warning, Miller points to the discarded trash and proceeds to ignite it with his blue blowtorch. He swiftly exits through the door, leaving the store engulfed in flames.
Within seconds, the fire engulfs the entire store, trapping the terrified clerk behind the counter.
The employee suffered first-degree burns and was promptly rushed to the hospital for medical treatment, according to a statement from the Detroit Police Department.
Law enforcement authorities confirmed the arrest of Julian Waddell Miller on Tuesday.
He now faces charges including intent to murder, first-degree arson, and various other felonies related to property damage and assault.
Despite being released on a $100,000 bond, Miller has been ordered to wear a GPS tracking device.
A bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for Monday, with a probable cause hearing set for Friday.
