Drinking Challenge Gone Wrong : UK Man's Dies On A Jamaican Trip After He Tried To Drink 21 Types Of Cocktail During A Drinking Challenge
A man from the UK, who was on vacation with his family in Jamaica, tragically passed away after attempting a challenge involving consuming all 21 cocktails from a bar's menu.
Timothy Southern, a 53-year-old man from Staffordshire, had already consumed 12 different cocktails from the menu before returning to his hotel room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Saint Ann, where he later lost his life, according to ITV News.
A pathologist in Kingston determined that Southern's cause of death was "acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption."
The coroner, Emma Serrano, ruled that his death was alcohol-related. Initial investigations revealed that Southern had been drinking brandy and beer throughout the morning.
During the day, Southern met two Canadian women who were celebrating a birthday.
The women informed him that they were attempting to complete the 21-cocktail challenge before midnight as part of their celebration.
It is unclear how quickly Southern consumed the 12 cocktails. His family, who were also on the trip, made efforts to assist him but were unsuccessful.
One of Southern's family members described the distressing incident, stating, "He was on his back choking. I placed him in the recovery position and called for an ambulance. He was making gurgling sounds. As soon as he was in the recovery position, he vomited. I called out his name, but there was no response."
The family has expressed their anger and dissatisfaction with the emergency crews who tried to save him, claiming that they were ill-prepared to handle the situation.
The relative further recounted, "When the nurse arrived, I asked if an ambulance had been called, and she said 'no.' I assumed she would take charge, but that was not the case. I noticed his body temperature dropping. I checked his pulse but couldn't find it. She insisted he had a pulse, but I was losing hope.
When I saw his face, I believed he had passed away." The relative criticized the nurse for not possessing sufficient training in life-saving techniques.
They expressed the belief that if the nurse had known what to do, Southern might still be alive.
