A tragic incident occurred at San Antonio International Airport, where a Texas airport worker lost their life after being pulled into a jet engine on Friday night, as reported.
Emergency responders rushed to the tarmac around 10:30 p.m. following reports that a ground worker had been "ingested" into the engine of a plane just after landing.
The Delta flight had arrived from Los Angeles and was operating with a single engine during the incident.
According to a statement from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided to KENS5, "Delta Flight 1111 was taxiing to the gate, with one engine running at that time, and a worker was ingested into that engine at 10:25 p.m."
An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the worker's tragic death.
The NTSB has been in contact with Delta Airlines, engaging in the process of gathering information.
The worker was an employee of Unifi Aviation, a company that contracts with airlines such as Delta for ground handling operations.
Unifi Aviation expressed deep sadness and condolences over the loss of their employee at San Antonio International Airport.
They emphasized their commitment to supporting their ground employees during this difficult time.
The initial investigation conducted by Unifi Aviation did not identify any operational safety procedures that could be linked to the worker's death.
Delta Airlines also conveyed their heartfelt sympathies, stating, "We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member's life in San Antonio."
They extended their support to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased during this challenging period.
This unfortunate incident follows a similar tragedy that took place on New Year's Eve at Montgomery Regional Airport, where an Alabama airport worker, Courtney Edwards, lost her life after being pulled into the engine of an American Airlines regional carrier flight.
Piedmont Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines, faced a fine of $15,625 as a result of an investigation that revealed their responsibility for a safety breach leading to the mother of three's death.
