A former Nigerian male model, Utseoritselaju Uwatse, has been jailed for four years for raping a fellow
college student in Ireland.
The offense took place on 20 April, 2018, and the injured party, Danielle Lyons, waived her anonymity
in order to name Uwatse.
Detectives said that on the night in question, a group of college students gathered for drinks in a Student Village to celebrate two birthdays before going into the city for a night out.
One of the members of the group was Danielle Lyons, and that was how she met Uwatse, whom she knew socially.
According to court documents, at one stage of the party, Uwatse picked Ms Lyons up and carried her into a bedroom and laid her on the bed, where she remembered him removing her shoes before falling asleep.
She woke early the following morning, and her clothes did not feel right, and she could feel pressure in her vagina.
Uwatse was beside her, and he then told her that they had sex and that the condom had broken.
She realized she had not consented to this and became upset.
Uwatse was arrested and questioned in June 2018 and he told authorities that the sex had been consensual.
After police investigations, he was charged to court where A Central Criminal Court jury found him guilty of a single count of rape in March, 2023.
He was sentenced to 4 years in prison on Monday, June 12, 2023.
