Video - Police Bodycam Captures Disturbing Scene When Mother Is Caught Red Handed Attempting To Drown a Toddler in Michigan
In a horrifying incident captured on police body camera footage, a 35-year-old mother from Michigan was arrested over the weekend for allegedly attempting to drown her 2-year-old daughter in a bathtub.
Jessica Deirdre Edward-Ricks, a mother of four, was taken into custody and is now facing serious charges, including assault with intent to murder, child abuse, and simple assault, as revealed by records reviewed by Law&Crime.
The disturbing incident took place at a residence on Bluestem Court in Albion.
Responding to a distressing 911 call made by Edward-Ricks' 15-year-old daughter, officers from the Albion Department of Public Safety and deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene.
The caller could be heard screaming for help.
Upon entering the home, first responders heard commotion coming from the downstairs bathroom, which was locked.
An ADPS officer kicked open the door and discovered a shocking scene—a 35-year-old woman submerged in the bathtub, holding a two-year-old under the water.
Acting swiftly, the officer rescued the child, taking her to the living room and administering CPR. The sheriff's deputy detained the mother.
Police body camera footage captures the intense moment when the bathroom door is forcefully opened.
The footage shows an adult female hunched over a small child in the bathtub.
The officers quickly intervene, pulling the child from the water.
Also, it became apparent that the child had sustained a stab wound to the chest, and one of the officers mentioned that the mother was attempting to drown the child in the bathtub.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the officers perform CPR and, after a tense moment, the child begins to cry, indicating signs of life.
The toddler suffered not only a stab wound to the chest but also a stab wound to the throat.
Additionally, her 4-year-old brother had multiple slash wounds.
Two other children, aged 8 and 15, who were present in the house, appeared unharmed.
Jessica Deirdre Edward-Ricks was immediately taken into custody, and due to concerns that she may have ingested cleaning fluid, she was transported to a local hospital.
Her two youngest children were also hospitalized and later airlifted to a children's hospital in Ann Arbor for specialized care.
As of Sunday, both children were reported to be in stable condition.
Edward-Ricks is currently held in the Calhoun County Correctional Facility with a bond set at $500,000.
During her court appearance, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Calhoun County Public Defender’s Office has not yet provided a comment on the case.
